IT’S FRIDAY night, and for the first time, I don’t have Maggie here to offer advice on what to wear for my date with Dylan. It’s her mother’s birthday, and she went home for the weekend. As she packed a bag, she looked eager to get out of here for a little while and away from Trevor.

I wish I knew what to say to make her feel better, but I’m the last person who can offer relationship advice. I have my own budding relationship to worry about.

Well, that’s not true. I’m more excited than worried about my date. I’m just not excited about the questions Dylan may ask or the expectations he may have. I’m starting to think it would be easier if Dylan really was the shallow player everyone makes him out to be. Instead, he wants to get to know me. How sweet and dangerous is that?

Without Maggie’s input, I decide to wear jeans and a sweater. The sweater doesn’t swallow me up, so I think she’d approve.

I’m nearly ready to head downstairs and wait for Dylan when I hear a commotion in the hallway outside my door. I pull it open to find Pledge Eight standing there with Hadley.

“Did Dylan really loan you his pledge?” Hadley asks. “If not, you’ve got a stalker.”

My brows perk up. “Are you worried about my welfare?”

“She asked if we were dating, so I explained why I’m here.” Pledge Eight rubs his cheek nervously. “Actually, she asked if we’re . . . you know.” He gestures between the two of us.

I’m sure she was hoping for a “yes” on that so she could report it back to Dylan. I narrow my eyes at Hadley and she sniffles, still not over the cold I gave her.

“You don’t owe her an explanation. The fact that we’re having wild monkey sex is none of her business.”

I tug a shell-shocked Pledge Eight into my room.

As I’m closing the door, he calls out, “No, we’re not. I don’t know why she said that, because we’re not!” Once the door closes, he mutters, “Are you trying to get me killed?”

“Relax. I’ll tell Dylan what happened. What are you doing here, anyway?”

His tense expression doesn’t change. “I thought I’d come by to see if you needed anything. For example, if you felt like ruining someone’s life tonight, I wanted to be here so I could help you out.”

“Dylan would never believe that of either of us,” I say, hoping it’s true. “Hadley and I have history, and he knows that. What’s your name, by the way? If I ruined your life, I might as well know your first name.”

“Charlie.”

“Well, Charlie, thank you for all your help this week, but you don’t have to carry my stuff anymore.”

He tilts his head. “Did Dylan say that?”

“No. I’m saying it.”

Charlie shakes his head. “Look, ma’am—”

“Please stop calling me ma’am. I’m the same age as you.”

“Sorry, Sky. Look at the other guys in the fraternity and look at me. I don’t exactly fit in, but I’m a legacy.
